Yes you can rocket jump easily, just make sure you have enough health.
Go on, Fire rockets at enemies' feet, rather than their torso (unless there's a wall right behind them). It's harder to get a direct hit than it is to use splash damage.
You need to reload regularly , the rocket launcher will only reload automatically when empty. If you've shot two rockets and have a second before the next enemy is in range, reload early to have all four ready.

Rocket jump into the enemy base to get a great surprise attack position or quickly kill an annoying sentry gun.
Time your rockets to hit where your opponent is going, not where he is.
Toss grenades while reloading the rocket launcher during a firefight.
Drop a nail grenade now and then to discourage pursuers, especially in narrow passages or small rooms.

Use your nail grenade to block small passages or your flag room. Not much defending points really.
