TFC Engineer strategy guide.
You need to build a level-3 sentry in a great location as quickly as possible and keep it repaired and loaded. Do not forget to rotate your sentry to point in the best direction for its placement.
You need to rember your ability to build or repair depends on the amount of metal you have. Any ammo you pick up that you cannot wear is converted to metal for this purpose. When you use your wrench, you'll see an "ammo count" at the bottom right of your HUD. You can hold up to 200; building or repairing a sentry takes 130, and building a dispenser takes 100.
speed medium health 90 armor 25 spawn / 50 max
weapons wrench, railgun, double-shotgun grenades normal, EMP
special build/detonate: sentry or dispenser
You use your wrench on existing sentry to upgrade, reload, repair, or dismantle. use wrench on teammates to repair armor.
You can use console commands to;
-build - displays build menu, menuselect X will select (X=1 for dispenser, X=2 for sentry)
-detdispenser - remotely detonate ammo dispenser
-detsentry - remotely detonate sentry gun
offensive tips!
-Engineers can be great on offense an occasionally tended (or tended by other engineers) sentry can left in your base while you go out on offense (destroying enemy sentries with grenades, for example). On an offensive team with a HW Guy and a Soldier, the Engineer makes a great flag runner.
-The EMP grenade will also detonate any explosive ammo in it's blast radius, so drop some (use 'discard') before detonating an EMP for an extra bang (or use a script).
-You can take out a heavy flag defense to help your teammates grab the flag by using a suicide EMP. Hold down the grenade2 key and get right next to them. You'll all go bye-bye, especially if you remember to drop some ammo first.
-Easier with the help of another engy, building a sentry in front of the enemy base can impede the enemy offense and front-line defense.
defensive tips!
- you need to keep all (yours and others') sentry guns upgraded to level 3, repaired, and full of ammo at all times. Low-level sentries are easy to kill or evade.
-Ok use the element of surprise when under heavy attack. DON'T keep putting your gun in the same place. Keep moving it around; it will slow the enemy down.
-Don't just set up a sentry and start tending to it , thats just boring. Play offense while you wait, or arrange for one engineer to tend to the sentry while the others go offensive. If there are other sentry guns around, tend to them too.
-Think carefully about where to build your sentry before doing so. The best places are hard to get a grenade to (i.e. away from a wall or corner), and have a clear view of a large area or important passage.
-Put a dispenser in a small, critical passage and hit a key bound to 'detdispenser' when the enemy is near (when your HUD says "enemies are using your dispenser"). SImilarly, 'detsentry' will remotely detonate a sentry gun (without using the menus).
